STEM Partnership Summary

Contests: Lockheed Martin hosts MathCounts©, a national competition that promotes middle school mathematics.

School-Based Activities: Space Day is program that brings astronauts and aerospace professionals together with students to generate excitement and learning around STEM topics. This program involves hands-on activities led by industry representatives. Lockheed Martin employees also participate in National Engineers Week activities with schools and community organizations. In addition, Lockheed Martin is an active participant in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program, sponsoring five regional competitions and providing grants for more than 50 teams mentored by Lockheed Martin volunteers.

Mentoring: Lockheed Martin offers a nationwide mentoring program for students in grades k-12.  The program is designed to encourage students to consider careers in enginnering. 

Apprenticeship Program: Lockheed Martin has developed a comprehensive 3-5 year apprenticeship program which provides on-the-job training integrated with academic instruction for high school age students . Students who complete the program are able to enter the workforce with strong IT skills as well as a solid academic background. Note: Although the program is NOT currently offered in MA the company does provide information on the model which could be valuable to others wishing to explore this type of STEM partnership activity.

Internships and Cooperative Education: Lockheed Martin also offers internships and/or cooperative education positions in the areas of IT and engineering related to the defense industry.  These opportunities are designed for college students, and are offered at the Burlington location.
